Putting climate action on the business agenda at our latest spotlight event

PR agency
Reducing our collective carbon footprint has been a big focus for spottydog over the last year, and now we want to help other businesses put climate change on the agenda for their employees too. To help spread the word, we teamed up with Climate Wise founder Steve Castree and HR expert Thomas Giles, to host a very special ‘Spotlight On’ event, exploring the benefits of having a green agenda for both employers and their employees. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights:

How spottydog became climate champions

First up, spottydog founder and CEO Rachel Roberts discussed our journey to become a more sustainable business, and shared some of the ways she’s integrated climate action into the business agenda. She explained: “As a business owner, getting feedback from my team has always been really important to me, so when our quarterly ‘spot check’ staff engagement survey revealed that 50% of our team thought we should be doing more to tackle climate change, I knew I had to pay attention. “In response to this, we took a number of steps to reduce our impact on the planet, including adapting our offices to make them more environmentally friendly and offsetting the carbon footprint of our 18-strong team through Climate Wise. “We’ve had an incredible response from both our team members and clients, and it’s great to know that we’re not only having a positive impact on the planet but also increasing employee satisfaction.” This is evidenced in the feedback Rachel has received from the spottydog pack, and creative executive Alice Sellars shared her reaction to the steps spottydog has taken. She said: “As someone who takes great care to reduce my environmental impact in my personal life, it’s essential that the company I work for cares about this too. “Spottydog’s commitment to the green agenda is therefore really important to me as an employee, and it definitely sets them apart from other businesses.”

The benefits of having a green agenda

Spottydog certainly isn’t alone in feeling the benefits of having a green agenda, and HR expert Thomas Giles evidenced this in his presentation. He explained: “Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z currently make up 90% of the global labour pool, and surveys of this demographic have revealed that a business’s attitude to tackling climate change plays an increasingly important role in attracting and retaining talent. “To become the employer of choice for the next generation, businesses should consider demonstrating their commitment to sustainability by implementing a proactive and transparent green policy. “By becoming a leader in this field, you can really engage your workforce by demonstrating to your team that you care about their future and the future of our planet.”

Offsetting your collective carbon footprint

Having taken a closer look at the impact of sustainability on staff morale and team engagement, we asked Climate Wise founder Steve Castree to share his advice for businesses looking to reduce their environmental impact. Steve said: “The green recovery refers to a changing way in which people, businesses, communities and countries must behave to help the fight against climate change. “Getting ahead of the game and engaging an ESG solution will not only make a positive difference to the world we live in, but (as demonstrated by Rachel and Thomas) can impact everything from your employee relations to new businesses opportunities.” So, what can you do? Steve explained: “Although we can all take steps to reduce the size of our carbon footprint, it’s almost impossible for businesses to have zero impact on the planet. “By going one step further and offsetting the carbon footprint of your team members through an organisation like Climate Wise, you can take meaningful action in the battle against global climate change. “This is also something that can be integrated into your employee benefits package, meaning for a relatively low cost you can meet your ESG commitments, improve employee satisfaction and give yourselves a potential differentiator with existing and new clients – a win/win/win for all involved!” To find out more about how Climate Wise can help your business offset your collective carbon footprint, click here.
