However, this doesn’t mean it’s not a great option for students fresh out of college or university. Marketing and PR offers so many opportunities and in so many different industries – it’s cliché but true to say that no two days are ever the same, making the sector an exciting and enticing one for young people starting out their careers.

But how do you get into the PR industry, what skills do you need and are there certain personality traits you need to exhibit? Do you need to take certain subjects at school, or follow a particular path at university? How To Break Into The PR Industry As A Newbie

PR is an industry that’s excellent for having a flexible pathway to entry – you don’t necessarily need to follow a certain route of education and work experience like you would in a law or medical career, for example. However, there are some things you can do to help yourself better stand out as an entry-level candidate.

Do your research

It helps to have a good understanding of what PR is, how it differs from the likes of advertising, and also what the latest industry updates are. It’s not a bad idea to subscribe to some newsletters and read the likes of PRWeek and Campaign to keep abreast of the latest news.

Make connections

LinkedIn is the perfect place to start building your personal brand, something very important if you want to get in to the PR industry. Here, you can follow prominent PR agencies and people who post marketing updates such as Girls In Marketing and the CIPR. Don’t be afraid to connect with PR pros near you too – you never know how valuable those people might be to your career.

Get experience

The PR industry is one fortunate enough to have many great employers that will offer work experience and internships. If you’re fresh out of school, college or university and want to break in to the industry, it’s a good idea to get a few of these under your belt. Education Pathways Into PR & Marketing

The fortunate thing about the PR industry, is that there isn’t a particular GCSE, A-Level or degree you need to get into the sector. Exhibiting the right skills is much more important. Some subjects that may help you along the way, though, include:

  • Business Studies
  • English Language or Literature
  • Creative Writing
  • IT
  • Public Relations (some universities offer a specific degree in PR)

What Skills Are Needed In PR?

PR and marcomms can be a broad sector, meaning there are places for both introverts and extroverts; those who prefer writing tasks and those who’d rather get themselves in front of a mic and camera. However, as a principle, some of the core skills needed in PR include creativity, intrigue, great writing skills, confidence, organisation and proactivity.

Depending on your interests, you may wish to go into a certain niche such as fashion or music PR. Or, most agencies will service a wide spectrum of both B2B and B2C clients, meaning your days will always be diverse and exciting.
