Karlie’s top five reasons to study and work in Birmingham

Our Student Recruitment as Account Executive at spottydog communications - Birmingham PR Agency

We’re big lovers of Birmingham around here, and with our centrally located office, the spottypack is right at the heart of all the city has to offer. In the spirit of celebrating Brum, we hear from Account Executive Karlie, who is sharing her top five reasons to study and work in the UK’s second-largest city.

A brilliant place to study

There are five universities to pick from in Birmingham, so whatever you’re dreaming of pursuing a career in, you’ll be able to explore plenty of options before deciding on the best fit for you. Knowing that I wanted to undertake a Media and Communications degree, I opted for Birmingham City University due to its leading media department and the PR lecturers’ experience and connections within the industry. The location also allowed me to work whilst studying in the city with so many businesses on my doorstep. As a result, I completed some valuable work experience placements in PR and comms, and got myself a part-time job at Utilita Arena Birmingham — getting paid to watch concerts? The dream student job!

The perfect place to network

In a city full of rising stars from all backgrounds and cultures, you never know who you’ll meet in Birmingham. In our industry, it’s essential for us to network in order to develop as PR professionals. With a host of different networking events in Birmingham, there is something to suit everyone — whether that’s a social media marketing meet-up or a Brum business conference. As a best of breed agency, we’re encouraged to put ourselves out there, don’t be shy, and just say ‘hello’. After all, you never know where a conversation could lead.

Boredom — what’s that?

Whilst living in the city, I had my fair share of adventures and fun nights out — and this hasn’t stopped since working at spottydog. Fun is an important part of our agency culture, so we’ve been able to make the most of Birmingham’s abundance of activities — from summertime sports matches and bottomless cocktails to head-scratching Peaky Blinders-themed escape rooms.

There’s definitely something to entertain everyone here. My personal favourite is a game of bowling at Lane7, followed by some drinks and darts at Flight Club.

Endless options to eat out

Of course, I had to mention the food. Birmingham has over 800 different places to eat, so I can guarantee you’ll always be spoilt for choice. Some of my personal favourite are Cosy Club, Original Patty Men and Gusto Italian. Whether you’re currently studying/working in Birmingham or thinking about it in the near future, it’s a must to step out of your comfort zone and try the host of different cuisines on offer. At spottydog, we love the food so much that we even founded a weekly ‘Fat Food Friday’!

Door to door in no time

spottydog HQ is only a five-minute walk from a hub of transport links, including Grand Central Station. This means we’re an excellent employer for people commuting from several locations, not just Birmingham. It also means our clients can pop into our office with ease for a business meeting or a quick chat and a cuppa, without having to worry too much about their journey. It also makes it simple for us to hop on a train to visit them.

After living and studying here for three years, and now bagging a spottyjob here, Birmingham has a very big place in my heart. I recommend it to anyone that is considering a new city for their next career move!
