If you’d told me four months ago that I would be learning a new job role from home, during a global pandemic, for a PR agency I would have thought you were ‘barking’ mad!
Less than three weeks into my journey here at spottydog, Boris put the UK on lockdown and like many others it was time to adapt to the #WFH lifestyle.
As the world around me seemed to fall into total chaos, with toilet rolls flying off shop shelves and restrictions meaning my social life was out the window, the one constant I could rely on was getting stuck into the world of PR and communications.
Many people have asked me what starting a new job during lockdown has been like and I’ve pinned it down to this: it’s as normal as it could be. Besides the obvious fact that I’m working remotely, I have still experienced all the usual feelings that come with starting at a new company.
I’ll admit that the thought of being a new pup whilst we all started to navigate through these uncertain times was terrifying. However, this fear was soon squashed as the spotty team came together and showed just how ‘pawsome’ they really are.
Being introduced to all the varied client portfolio at spottydog was like being an excited child in a sweet shop – there are so many exciting projects and clients to be involved with and I couldn’t wait to get started!
From helping new client Climate Wise kick-start their comms, to launching the Chuckit! Challenge 2020 competition and completing my first press sell-in for BNP Paribas Personal Finance UK, it’s safe to say these past few months have been far from quiet.
Pre-lockdown, I attended Crufts to promote Chuckit! and engage with influencers. This exposed me to the world of pet consumers, and now I cannot get enough of all the ‘pawful’ pet puns and the playful humour of the brand. Working on Chuckit! has taught me that to deliver the best outcome for any client, you need to know the ins and out of the industry you’re wanting to tap into.
The highlight of my first few months was seeing the coverage from my first press sell-in. I’ve been told it is something I will never forget – and I cannot agree more! The sense of achievement gained from being a part of the storytelling process, makes all the hard work seem worthwhile.
Sadly, I haven’t been able to have the full experience of the spottydog social life, with all planned social nights and ‘Fat Food Fridays’ being put on hold. If they’re anything like the teams daily virtual social calls, then I’m in for treat!
Every day at 3pm the team comes together for 30 minutes of non-work-related quizzes, challenges and show off tasks. So far, my family have witnessed me decorating an egg as Yoda and running around trying to grab items for various challenges. For me, having this time to interact with everyone has helped me feel a part of the spottydog pack, and made me even more excited to return to spottydog PR agency HQ.
There is a great uncertainty about what life will be like after lockdown, but there is also lots to look forward to (Fat Food Fridays especially). I feel like I have already learned so much during my first months at spottydog PR agency and I can’t wait to experience more of the spottydog life away from my kitchen table!
