spottydog was briefed by dental health charity the British Dental Health Foundation to create a resource for teachers to use in the delivery of mouth and teeth health education. The resource needed to be suitable for teaching at Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, but use one creative theme and template materials to minimise investment in new design materials.
Stage one was to work with the design team at Big Cat to develop a creative theme which would be suitable for children across the three age stages. The concept centred on the creation of a central character called ‘Buddy’ who used a series of gadgets to help learn more about dental health. The creative theme was tweaked to cater to each age range, with materials for older children focused on gadgets and rockets where as for the younger children we focused on the Buddy character.
Stage two involved spottydog analysing existing dental education resources and in collaboration with an education consultant, develop a series of lesson plans, presentation materials and student activities that met national curriculum learning intentions.
Stage three saw the design and content brought together to create the Dental Buddy lessons with each one including a lesson plan for teachers, classroom presentation and lesson activities.
The output was the creation of eight age and design appropriate lessons. spottydog went beyond the original brief and created educational materials in SMART and ActivInspire interactive whiteboard formats, in addition to powerpoint and PDF to increase usage from amongst teachers. Hard data to evaluate the success of the project will be available through evaluation sheets issued to teachers who have downloaded the resource.
