My first month at spottydog communications as a PR, Social Media & Communications Executive has brought me something new and exciting each day. I have quickly come to learn that no day is the same in PR and communications, but that’s the best part!
On my first day, I started with some coffee — specifically from Pret, which is just a five-minute walk from the spottydog office. A win-win! I then entered the office and met the spottypack. I quickly felt at home in the office, which is filled with dog-related things, bright colours and an array of different spaces to work.
The spottydog team then introduced me to my first three clients: Earth Animal, Tuft and Mitchells and Butlers. I came to learn that my focus within spottydog is pets and pubs — a very exciting combination.
Week two was when I was fully started to immerse myself in client work and, of course, my coffee routine continued!
I started to pick up the daily social media check ins on Instagram and Facebook for Earth Animal where I engaged with and replied to pet influencers. I feel very lucky that I now start my working day looking at adorable pictures of dogs.
I also helped pack the Earth Animal PR packages filled with dog chews. The best part of this, though, was receiving the positive coverage from influencers during my daily check in — the pups just can’t get enough of Earth Animal.
For Mitchells and Butlers, I did some stakeholder calls, where I phoned local businesses to invite them to a pub reopening. It was great to chat to business owners and feel like I had contributed to the process of the pub’s reopening.
In week three, the coffee was still strong, and my tasks were completely different. Week three brought me the Earth Animal report where I saved down the influencer coverage gained from sending out the PR packages.
I also spent time drafting a press release for Tuft and then proactively reaching out to journalists. After generating an exciting lead, I received a PerkBox recognition from Rachel, which made me feel so appreciated and satisfied!
I also had a lightbulb moment this week; I confirmed to myself the difference between proactive and reactive PR. Proactive is when a premediated story is sent to journalists with an angle already decided; however, reactive is quickly and spontaneously looking for an angle within a story already proposed by a journalist.
Week four brought me more coffee and the chance to paws deep into my fourth client, Nooshie. As someone who absolutely loves fashion and animals, it is great to work with a client who have a passion for fashion and pets!
I sourced some fashion-forward pet influencers and ensured they were trendy enough for Nooshie. I then created a media list of fashion-forward magazines to utilise in the future.
In summary, I have had a great first month at spottydog communicatons. I am still in awe at how much I have learned from my fellow pups and I cannot wait to learn even more!
